Pittsburgh Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: Is a skunk that is active during the daytime rabid?

You might see some skunks happily foraging your neighbor’s garbage cans in the middle of the day. You might worry that they might have rabies since skunks are commonly out at night. You might ease your worry since not all skunks have rabid when they wander urban areas during the daytime.

Normally, skunks are repuscules. This means that they will only leave their dens at dusk or at dawn. They also have short eye sights. They won’t be able to see incoming predators and prepare a defense if they go out during the day.

However, not all skunks want to go out at night. There are skunks especially in the winter, which will look for food when the temperature is not too cold. They need the heat that the sun provides when they are out in the snow. You might also be seeing a mother skunk which forages the trash cans. When their babies are hungry, mother skunks will not hesitate to seek food regardless of what time of the day it is. They are the most caring and protective mothers that you can encounter.

If the young ones are old enough, mother skunks prefer the daylight to teach their young ones some tricks in order to survive the wild. At this time, you may see groups of skunks inside your yard digging watermelons or shrubs.

When to Tell if the Skunks has Rabies
Skunks which act in an irritated way and with plenty of saliva on its mouth may be rabid. If they attack your pet cat or pet dog without any reason, and they kept stumbling around, this is the best time to call for help. Rabid skunks are aggressive. You should not try to approach them and keep your pets out of the way.

A healthy skunk will normally try to scare you away by stomping its tail and dashing quickly in the opposite direction. The actions and the attitude of the skunks can tell you if it is rabid or not. If it just wanders aimlessly and it doesn’t seem to care if predators or humans approach it, call your local county wildlife. They can help the skunk and take it out of your way. You must be careful when you approach a wild animal since they can be unpredictable when they are sick.

Skunks are also notoriously stubborn but they are wise. If you see a skunk fearlessly digging your freshly planted tomatoes in the middle of the day, you can try to approach it with caution. Healthy skunks will try scare tactics and might emit a foul-smelling liquid. You don’t have to worry about having a rabid skunk nearby.

Call the Professionals
It is important to know your limits when it comes to wild animals. Even if your caring instincts kick in, restrain yourself. Call a professional and explain to them what is happening. But remember that seeing a rabid skunk is very rare. Not all of them that wanders every morning are rabid.
